Dear friends of Kent & Ann Moriarty, Yesterday morning, Thursday 29 January 1998, in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, Kent & Ann were hit by a car while riding their bike. They were knocked unconscious for a time and were taken to a good private hospital in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas. Both of them were badly abraded and bruised, requiring intravenous fluids. Kent has a broken wrist that may require surgery or perhaps just a cast. Kent is in a neck brace and is unable to get out of bed. He required some stitches in the top of his head. He had bad facial abrasions. They are expected to stay in the hospital at least until Monday 2 February. The doctors are recommending at least six weeks off the bicycle. Ann & Kent think they were intentionally hit by a van that had been following them. The van had been following at slow speed, directing other traffic to pass them. That's the last thing they remember before the collision. When Ann came to, there were people around them and a Red Cross ambulance. Kent regained consciousness in the ambulance. The hospital staff and others nearby have been very helpful and gracious to Kent & Ann. The family working with SERVAS, with whom Ann & Kent were going to stay while in Tuxtla Gutierrez, have offered their home as a place to continue recovery. At this point (late Friday), Kent & Ann still intend to continue their trip. They have their possessions but have not yet seen their bike or learned its condition. They are still planning to meet Kent's parents in Guatemala in mid-February (presumably not traveling via bicycle). Perhaps their plans will change as they get a clearer view of their present and future conditions. Kent's parents can carry mail to them if you send it to the following address for delivery by Thursday 12 February: Dave & Roddie Stelle 6391 Hillside Drive El Sobrante, CA 94803 Please pray for their recovery; for the effectiveness of the medical care; for wisdom as they adapt their plans to this mishap; and for their continued protection. -- Phil Davidson PhilDavidson@compuserve.com http://www.idiom.com/~davidson/
